A Sunrise man sleeping on a mattress next to his 7-month-old daughter accidentally rolled on top of her and suffocated her, police say.
But police said the 30-year-old father, Emanuel Lawrence, was irresponsible in many ways before the accident: He allegedly smoked marijuana and stayed up all night playing a video game. He also later tried to cover up how his daughter died, police said.
Aside from her father, Jaidyn Lawrence also lived with her mother, Ines Gonzalez, her 3-year-old sister, Aaliyah Lawrence, and a man described as a family friend, Patrick Dorce, in a two-bedroom apartment in the 10000 block of Winding Lakes Road, police said.
Lawrence was unemployed for several months and stayed home while Gonzalez kept a daytime job and attended Florida Career College at night, the arrest report said. Lawrence and Gonzalez have been a couple for four years. […]
He allegedly smoked marijuana with a friend outside his apartment in the afternoon, a police report said. He then played a video game on the Xbox gaming system until 6 a.m. the next day.
After the video-game marathon, he fell asleep for about 45 minutes before Gonzalez woke him up and told him to feed the baby.
Fifteen minutes later, when he was done feeding his daughter, he placed her on a queen-size mattress between him and his other daughter and fell asleep for more than seven hours.
About 2:30 p.m., he woke up and discovered he was “lying on top of Jaidyn.”
The baby was face down on the mattress, and he realized she was dead, the report said. He moved Aaliyah, who was OK, to the living room.
Before officials arrived at his home, Lawrence allegedly tried to cover up how the accident by moving the baby’s body from the mattress to her crib. He later told police he did so for “fear of being arrested,” an arrest report said.
Okay, even John isn’t that fucking stupid. But it’s a pretty funny thought.
